There's a good British psych folk group called The Owl Service, too. I must have first read Alan Garner's The Owl Service some forty years ago when I was interested in all things concerning Welsh mythology. The Owl Service were a perfect choice to support Martin Carthy. The Owl Service (Peter Plummer, 1969/70). I'll begin this post with a photo taken from Wikimedia of Yr Wydffa (Snowdon) showing the beauty of Wales. An ancient legend comes to life among three teenage children in a Welsh valley, in The Owl Service, the 1969 TV serialisation of Alan Garner's classic novel. A few weeks ago for some reason I kept thinking about The Owl Service by Alan Garner, a book I'd not read since I was at primary school. I never knew this existed before visiting the groovy Folk Horror Review. They give their influences as "The folklore, myths and legends of the British Isles, the English folk revival, magick and the great outdoors. First, the Service assumes that fire is a threat to the owl and that this threat can be curtailed by aggressive thinning (logging) to reduce trees and shrubs that fuel fires in the owls' critical habitat. Now I've finished reading The Owl Service it's made me want to go back to Wales. Alan Garner, The Owl Service author, also wrote a chilling ghost story called The Keeper for the 1983 children's TV series Dramarama Spooky. €�The Owl Service” is what nursery rhymes would sound like if they grew up. Gary Couzens reviews the two-disc Region 2 set from Network. I wanted a hardcover first edition which cost a pretty penny at the time. Over time and with the benefit of both office and field experience, the Service began the question the effectiveness existing Forest Practice Rules to avoid “take” of Northern Spotted Owls.
